Luxury Living Room Ideas 4 – Rough Luxe

August 28, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Just looking at those two words together – ‘rough’ and ‘luxe’ is intriguing; seemingly opposites, they have been paired together to form a new(ish) interior decorating trend. I guess it is similar to interior decorating styles that mix the old with new – again, proving that opposites can work together in harmony. We would like to take a look in more detail at this decorating trend that everyone is talking about! Is it something that can be pulled off in your average home and how can we achieve the look on a reasonable budget? Find out here…

  • This is an interior design trend that started its path to fame in uber-trendy hotels and restaurants. Now it has started to catch on in residential design and home decorating. The key elements of this design is to have some strong luxurious touches and a rough edge. New furniture is placed together with old furniture and expensive looking textiles are side by side with cheap materials.
  • There is a hint at bohemianism – with the use of lots of art for decoration and interesting patterns in fabrics. It is generally considered that period homes pull this look off best and go easy if you are in a rented property!
  • It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but one of the key elements of this look is primitive walls – no paint, wallpaper or decals. What then? Bare plaster? Yes, bare plaster is what really brings this design trend into its own. You could try polished plaster or just take the leap with one wall to begin with. Exposed brick will also work but seek a professionals advice before taking on these projects.
  • Antique furniture or furniture that has an antique look to it is the next step to achieving this decorating trend. Choose pieces that are neutral coloured or with metallic finishes. The idea is to look opulent and elegant but with the impression that the space has been neglected. By this, we don’t mean dust-balls rolling across the floor – try placing large ornamental mirrors on the floor and leaning to the wall as opposed to the ‘finished’ look of hanging them up.
  • This is a daring trend to go for – which is why there is always an alternative for the less brave. A room that has been decorated in a traditional style can be given a slight rough-luxe feel with just one distressed item. Have a think about an item of furniture that was painted and sanded down to reveal its undercoat or an old chandelier with chipped paint. This can also be the case in a more contemporary space – but choose your distressed items with a period feel.
  • When choosing window treatments, go with full length curtains in a rich metallic such as gold in velvet and don’t forget the tasselled tiebacks and rather than use curtain tracks look for distressed or antiqued metal curtain poles. In rooms where curtains are less convenient, metallic finish blinds will fit well into the overall scheme.
